Ecommerce, food delivery services largely unaffected by gig workers’ strike

New Delhi: Following the strike call given by gig workers, the food app companies immediately backed down. They bowed to the demands of the delivery boys and came forward to offer several incentives. The Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union had called for the strike. As a precautionary measure, fearing business losses, the food apps announced several incentives. As a result, the strike had a mixed impact in several places. With the intention of avoiding disruption on the last day of the year, food delivery companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, and others announced several incentives. Zomato announced that it would pay Rs. 120-150 per order to gig workers who work between 6 PM and 12 AM on December 31st.

It stated that each person could earn an average of Rs. 3,000 depending on the number of orders. Similarly, it also promised that it would not impose penalties for cancellations or not accepting orders. Similar to Zomato, Swiggy also announced offers for its delivery partners. It stated that they could earn up to Rs. 2,000 during peak hours. The quick commerce platform Zepto has also announced incentives. It is known that gig workers across the country went on strike on December 25th, giving a shock to food delivery apps. This had a severe impact on the delivery apps. With a large number of orders expected on New Year’s Eve, and fearing a similar impact again, it seems the companies temporarily averted the crisis by increasing incentives for the gig workers.
